The Science of Scent

Scent is perhaps the most powerful of all our senses and essential oils were designed by nature to work in harmony with it. Our instinctive need to feed our sense of smell is the reason we surround ourselves with candles, potpourri, perfumed shampoo, shower gel, body lotion and more. Simply put - it feels good to smell nice things, so therefore we subconsciously seek out the pleasure of scent. And what better way to do it than to apply the basic principles of aromatherapy to our most mundane of tasks - like cleaning.

But here's the difference between essential oils, Aromatherapy Naturals infused cleaning goods, and all those other wonderfully smelly things: the natural chemical components of pure essential oils (the phenols, ketones, etc.) are what give them medicinal and therapeutic properties. Essential oils are the "life blood" of the plant and through the miracle of nature, can have an extraordinary effect on our sense of well being. Case in point: a quick sniff of pure spearmint essential oil can instantly transport us back to our childhood when Mom would finally give in and buy us that pack of Wrigley's Spearmint Gum at the grocery store. The scent of the spearmint reminds us of the gum, which invokes a positive mood brought on by the pleasant memory associated with that particular scent.

Now imagine being able to put your olfactory system to work for you by applying the science of scent to the more mundane aspects of your everyday life. Beware of Synthetic Fragrances

The home fragrance and cleaning product market is currently flooded with lavender scented products because the aroma of pure lavender is known to be calming, soothing, and restful. But the vast majority of these commercial products are being scented with synthetic lavender “fragrance” or “perfume oils”. These artificially created fragrance oils are usually derived from coal tar and have no aroma-therapeutic value whatsoever. However, they’re typically the culprit in adverse respiratory reactions and allergies among consumers. But most manufacturers continue to use synthetic fragrances in their products instead of pure essential oils for two reasons: cost and consumer unawareness.

Diffusing Essential Oils

Why Diffuse Essential Oils?  Diffusing essential oils is not only pleasing to the senses, it actually purifies the air around us. When essential oils are diffused, the molecules are broken up into micro-fine mist particles. These particles stay suspended in the air for long periods of time, thereby reducing airborne odors and bacteria. You see, Diffused oils don't just mask odors; they actually alter the structure of the molecules that create odors - rendering them harmless!  Essential Oils, often referred to as “Nature’s Pharmacy” can neutralize the unpleasant odors and airborne bacteria that linger in our homes, cars, workplaces etc. When properly diffused, many essential oils can promote relaxation, relieve tension, clear the mind, and improve concentration.
